OZ - The Wizard of Oz is a fairytale that allows your imaginations to run wild, offering unlimited potential in terms of design and ideas. It was a project that I wanted to do for a very long time.
The basic idea was that innocent, sweet, little Dorothy would be surrounded by friendly yet problematic creatures / monsters, and all together they would sit next to the "yellow brick road" like a problematic, yet functional family. The atmosphere that we wanted to portray was that of a dark fairytale, a horror movie but with cute monsters, something scary but gave the feeling of a strong family bond.
One of the most important parts of the composition is the title “OZ”, which appears as part of the figure display, rather than just on the wooden base – the title it is as important as the characters themselves. In the fairytale “Oz” is the goal, the final destination, essentially it is a protagonist who is overshadowed by our four main characters - Dorothy, the Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tinman.
On the title of “OZ” are also listed the desires of each character; a “Heart" for the Tinman, ”Courage” for the Lion, a "Brain" for the Scarecrow and Dorothy’s deepest yearning to go home "There is no place like home".
The material I used to complete the “OZ” sculpt were BeesPutty, Aves, plastic card and polyester putty.
I painted this figure with all my heart and passion, i try to be very close to the Michael view, i remember he wanted to do a kind of “romantic nightmeare”, with some king of gothic “Tim Burton’s” style soul.
But the great thing to work with Michael is that even with is strong vision and personality, he always listen to the other and always think in deep aboout different option you can purprose to him.
For example the idea to do the tinman not in a “rusted iron/silver” color but in a kind of various “steampunk” brass, bronze, color with a strong yellowish dominant, was my idea; he accepted that but at the same time purpose me to add other metal color to create more variety. Is a process we did togheter, something we shared every moments.
The biggest part of my interpretation in this figure is basically the idea to make the OZ letter in a kind of glowing emerald green: in this way all the composition is touched by this kind of “back green light” that is clearly connected with OZ (in the book the wizard live in the emerald city were everything is green and so strong that people needs specific glass to see the others colors).
The four main characters are painted with four different approach: super wheatered and textured the scarecrow, nothing on him is smooth; shiny diffrent metals colors (paint with non metallic colors) for the tinman, with a lot of scratch and little texture to try to reproduce the idea of hammered metal; realistic and smooth the lion, created with a lot of diffrent little brushstrokes to simulate the fur; and cute and smooth the little Dorothy.
The figure is painted with a lot of diffrent kind of acrilyc colors, pastels and Inks
